Hey there, get ready for a thrilling new episode of Make It Short!
Once again, we have assembled an incredible team of film industry pros, all set to jump headfirst into the fascinating world of filmmaking and spill some juicy insights about a specially chosen short film.
Our main goal is to provide constructive feedback and craft a valuable learning experience by delving into the stories of the filmmakers we interview. Joining me on this exciting episode are Bernhard Pucher, filmmaker and co-founder of CenterFrame, and Brazilian screenwriter and director, Lucas Abrahão, returning as a guest panelist in our studio in São Paulo.
The short film we had the pleasure to talk about is called Diabla, directed and co-written by US-based filmmaker Ashley George.
The film takes place in Mexico and follows a 16-year-old girl who, after surviving a sexual assault, finds retribution through her previously untapped female power and local witch culture. In this feminist revenge horror tale, the director skillfully employs the elements of the genre to examine the terrifying aspects that permeate deeply patriarchal societies and toxic masculinity. The film also explores the devastating consequences rape culture, but does so in a sensitive way - which is crucial when telling stories of this kind. Nonetheless, the distressing subject matter of Diabla may trigger some viewers.
While we all loved the incredible work of Ashley and her team, Lucas focused on the mix of fantastic genre elements with more down-to-earth and realistic aspects, in building the narrative of Diabla. Bernhard also enjoyed the natural and grounded look at Mexican culture and how it developed the horror story together with the sensitive topics the short film deals with. I myself enjoyed the timing and pace of the story and the perspective it chose to portray this refreshing female revenge movie. Ashley shared many details about how she came to be the director of this amazing film about women fighting back.
Now, enough talk! Tune in to watch both the captivating Diabla, and our dynamic discussion surrounding this inspiring short film on female empowerment.
