Hello and welcome to Make It Short, the show where we bring in film-industry professionals to offer constructive feedback to the creators while exploring the intricacies of producing, directing and writing a short film.

Joining me in today’s panel we have Bernhard Pucher, co-founder of CenterFrame and seasoned filmmaker, and, we are thrilled to welcome Dagmar Scheibenreif, a talented London-based writer-director from Austria with a rich background in cinematography.

Our focus for this episode is on an endearing dramedy short film called Killing Christmas, which we have selected from the numerous film submissions we’ve received.
Our guests will bring their diverse perspectives and insights to the discussion, offering valuable feedback on various aspects of the film. Through this discussion, we hope to learn from each other's experiences and gain a better understanding of the art of filmmaking. So, sit back, relax, and join us for an enlightening conversation about the fascinating world of cinema.

It is a particular pleasure to have with us the screenwriter, producer, and lead actor of Killing Christmas - Pippa Hinchley.

KILLING CHRISTMAS - Written & Produced by Pippa Hinchley

In the movie, Holly (played by our guest, Pippa) is fed up with the holiday season and decides to escape her husband, family, and the Christmas Eve cooking mania. However, her plans take an unexpected turn after a bizarre encounter with a store security guard. Through this encounter, Holly receives a surprising and otherworldly Christmas gift which changes her perspective on the holiday season.
This darkly comedic tale is infused with magic realism, making for a unique and memorable holiday story.

We all fell in love with Pippa’s story, told in such a sweet and fun way.
Bernhard praised the charm of the performances and argued that the fact that Pippa wrote the script as well as performed it helped give it much authenticity.
Dagmar, in turn, agreed and added that while the script and the final version of the film are quite similar, the acting does add a lot of special touches. She also told us how she loved the unexpectedness of the story - which is really one of its strongest aspects, together with its charming and clever storytelling.

In the discussion, Pippa revealed that her dramedy script was actually adapted from a play she had written, a fact which explains many of the choices made for the short film, such as the setting and the number of characters. It also illustrated that many times, when we have a film adapted from a play, we might also find a need to include some “cinematic” elements in the new version of the work, and this is what seemed to have happened in Killing Christmas.
Pippa also related her inspirations and the challenges of writing, acting, producing a film, and finding the best director to help make it happen.

As has already become a habit with us, we ended with nitpicking and trying to locate the things we would change in the film.

It was a very interesting discussion and a very unique one as well, given that we had the chance to talk about such a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
Now don’t wait any longer and go take a look at the episode! Make the most of our panel's expertise and feedback on the art of filmmaking to craft your first short film. We are confident that you will find valuable tips and gain fascinating insights into the creative process and the challenges of bringing a film to life.
