Welcome to the newest episode of Make It Short - the show where we talk about short films, interview filmmakers, and talk about the whole process of bringing a short film to life! Joining me in today’s panel we have, as usual, Bernhard Pucher, co-founder of CenterFrame and seasoned filmmaker, and we are proud to have with us the incredible screenwriter Tina Walker!
The short film we will be talking about is called Wrenched, a multi-genre tale submitted to us by the talented filmmaker Jonny Ruff.

Wrenched is a satirical comedy that takes place in Italy, where a heterosexual British couple are on their way back to the airport, when a flat tire forces them to stop on a forest road at night. The man first calls the car rental, and we see two versions of how this went: in the first he suddenly speaks fluent Italian, saving the day and impressing his girlfriend, but in the second he mumbles in broken Ital-glish and gets nowhere.

Then he tries to change the tire himself; We first see him succeed with ease, to the relief of both, but then we see him completely fail to get the jack to work and ashamedly admit defeat.
All through these sequences he tries to fulfil society’s expectations of what a man should do in this situation, what a man should be. But we (and he) soon realize he is not able to do any of the actions required to save them from their tight spot.
To clench the man’s humiliation, a local guy (a husky Italian) shows up and easily replaces their tire - earling the girlfriend’s gratitude.

It is an interesting analysis of masculinity, where the protagonist is constantly trying to be someone he is not, completely ruled by preconceptions of gender roles.

WRENCHED - Directed  by Jonny Ruff

While we all loved watching Wrenched, Bernhard and Tina understood it as a multiverse story, where different versions of our man are present in alternate versions of that event. But when they read the script, they realized they were all the same man, and the sequences where he succeeded in saving the day were in his head.
And so we all discussed the film as we understood it and as it was made, together with Jonny Ruff, who was kind enough to join us for what turned out to be a great conversation.
We took advantage of his presence to ask him all of our burning questions about Wrenched and the different themes and genres it tackles. We also discussed budget, casting, writing, music, and so many other crucial aspects of filmmaking.

So -  jump in and discuss it with us! Watch this incredible little short film and tell us what you think - we will be discussing it further in our Make It Short group on the CenterFrame platform. Also, If you are a filmmaker or have contributed to a short film as a director, writer, editor, cinematographer, sound editor, or any other crew member, we encourage you to submit your work for consideration on our show and have a great conversation with us as well!
